The Cowboys need to fill some holes via the draft, but they don’t have a first round pick to work with. Here are guys who could go to Dallas in Rounds 2-7.
The trade for Amari Cooper rejuvenated the Cowboys offense in 2018. It did, however, cost them their first round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. No one in Dallas wants to redo that transaction, but it will make life slightly more difficult for Jerry Jones and company in April.
The good news for Cowboys fans is that the first round pick is the only selection missing from the team’s portfolio. They do have their own picks in all of the draft’s other rounds. Obviously, the Dallas front office needs to make sure they hit all their remaining picks to overcome the lack of a first rounder.
Round 2: Chase Winovich
We slotted Zach Allen here in our initial mock, but it’s possible the Cowboys will look for a more explosive pass rusher. If Winovich lasts this long, he’d be great value for the Dallas defense.
The team won’t need a rookie defensive end to step in and replace Demarcus Lawrence right away, but the veteran is starting to get really expensive. Every day that goes by without Lawrence signing a long-term contract increases the chances that he’ll play somewhere else in the near future. Selecting a talented defensive end like Winovich this season would give the team much-needed depth and the front office some much-needed leverage.
As a player, Winovich isn’t the most athletic edge rusher in this class, but his motor is a huge asset. When you watch his tape at Michigan you never see him take a play off. At times, Winovich wills his way to the passer.
The real question is whether or not Winovich lasts this long. There’s a chance he sneaks into the end of Round 1. If he lasts this long, look for the Cowboys to jump at the chance to take him.
