Most NFL observers expect to see the Giants take a quarterback in Round 1, but it’s possible Dave Gettleman will trade up for Nick Bosa.
Everyone knows the Giants could benefit from finding Eli Manning’s successor in the 2019 NFL Draft. That doesn’t mean quarterback is the team’s only glaring need. GM Dave Gettleman would also like to come out of the draft with an impact pass rusher.
That’s precisely why the Giants are bringing in Nick Bosa for a pre-draft meeting on Tuesday. The former Ohio State star is considered by most to be the top edge rushing prospect in this year’s draft. That also means the likelihood of him being available when New York is scheduled to make their first selection at No. 6 exceedingly small.
If the Giants really want to come out of the draft with Bosa on their team they’ll need to move up into the Top 2. Most people believe the Cardinals will take quarterback Kyler Murray with the No. 1 overall selection, but the 49ers are being strongly linked with Bosa at No. 2. That means Gettleman will need to make a deal with either Arizona or San Francisco if he falls in love with Bosa.
Jumping up that far in the draft is going to be very difficult. At the very least, it would prove to be an expensive transaction for the Giants. They’d need to give up their No. 6 pick along with at least two other premium assets to move up four of five spots. Given how many needs the Giants still have on their roster that doesn’t seem like a very wise decision.
However, most people said drafting a running back with the No. 2 overall pick last season wasn’t a smart move by Gettleman either. The Giants GM is fiercely independent when it comes to his decision-making. If he really believes that Bosa is a generational talent at defensive end then Gettleman won’t hesitate to pay a king’s ransom to bring him to New York.
Ultimately, Giants fans might be saved by the unwillingness of either the Cardinals or 49ers to make a deal. Arizona seems to have already fallen in love with Murray and San Francisco may already have similar feelings about Bosa. That makes it very possible that both teams will reject any overtures from the Giants to move up into the top of the draft.
Giants fans hoping for pass rushing help in the draft need to look at prospects other than Bosa. He’s almost certainly going to be too expensive for New York to acquire. Gettleman might push to see if a deal can be made, but the odds are stacked against him.
