Redskins may be the team to trade for Josh Rosen

The Redskins haven’t been heavily linked to Josh Rosen yet, but Washington could easily end up being the team who deals for the Cardinals quarterback.

Just because the Redskins made a move to acquire Case Keenum this offseason doesn’t mean they’re done trying to improve their quarterback options. Washington is one of several teams putting a lot of energy into scouting Josh Rosen.

As the draft approaches more and more NFL executives are becoming convinced that the Cardinals will make Kyler Murray the No. 1 overall pick. If that happens, Arizona almost has to trade Rosen. Giving up on last year’s top-10 pick isn’t a great outcome for the Cardinals, but they will have painted themselves into that corner by going all in on Murray.

Rosen may not be Arizona’s ideal quarterback, but there’s a reason he went so high in the 2018 NFL Draft. He showed a lot of arm talent at UCLA that endeared him to a number of NFL scouts. His poor stint with the Cardinals has damaged his stock around the league, but it hasn’t torpedoed it.

That’s precisely why the Redskins are “doing genuine due diligence” on Rosen according to Chris Mortensen. No one is claiming that a deal between Washington and Arizona is imminent, but it’s also clear that Bruce Allen and the rest of the higher-ups in the Redskins organization are intrigued by the idea of adding a talented young quarterback to their roster.

The Redskins originally though Alex Smith would be their quarterback for several more seasons until he suffered a gruesome injury that will force him to miss the entire 2019 season. It’s possible he can come back in 2020, but no one in Washington can afford to bet on that.

Publicly, Redskins officials are comfortable with the idea of starting Colt McCoy next season. The decision to move for Keenum says otherwise. The Redskins are desperately trying to recover from Smith’s injury by signing a new quarterback of the future.

Rosen may not be the perfect solution, but he’s the best option available for the Redskins. If they can bring him in without sacrificing a first round pick it’s a move they should jump all over. Rosen hasn’t forgotten how to play football in the last year. It’s very possible he’ll thrive once he’s able to escape the awkward situation in Arizona.

In the end there will be plenty of teams interested in buying low on Rosen, but the Redskins should be in the bidding until the very end. They’re one of the teams with the most to gain by taking a chance on the talented quarterback.
