2019 NFL Draft: 5 players Chiefs could take in Round 1

Andy Reid made a big bet on Patrick Mahomes and it paid off handsomely in 2018. Now it’s time to see who the Chiefs will bet on in this year’s NFL Draft.

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense scored more than enough points to win a Super Bowl for Kansas City last season. Unfortunately for head coach Any Reid and his staff, the defense didn’t hold up its end of the bargain.

Losing both Dee Ford and Justin Houston this offseason doesn’t figure to help matters much in the front seven. Expect that to be a strong area of focus for the Chiefs in this year’s draft. It won’t surprise anyone if the team elects to strengthen their defensive front via several picks.

That doesn’t mean the Chiefs are locked into a defensive lineman or linebacker at No. 29. This is an organization that will certainly prioritize picking the best player available over everything else. They’d like to come away with a top flight defender, but they won’t pass on an offensive guy if they believe he’s the best player on the board.

Fortunately, the board looks to line up pretty well with the team’s most obvious defensive needs. Here are five players the Chiefs may draft in Round 1.

5. Greedy Williams

It may sound like a bit of a broken record at this point, but many NFL media members believe Williams is poised for a tumble on Draft Day. There are legitimate concerns about his technique and lack of interest in tackling.

However, corners with his insane combination of size and speed don’t come along every day. If he’s still available when the Chiefs go on the clock they should sprint to the podium to select him. The acquisition of Tyrann Mathieu is really going to help Kansas City’s secondary in 2019, but getting Williams might make it one of the most intriguing units in the NFL.
