Kansas City Chiefs: 5 free agents to sign in order to win in 2020

The defending Super Bowl Champions have very few holes to fill on a loaded roster, but signing these free agents may make them unstoppable.

The Kansas City Chiefs, fresh off the heals of their first Super Bowl title in 50 years, entered the offseason with priority free agents to keep.

Magically, the team was able to retain its most coveted free agents, and compel some of its more high-priced veterans to restructure their contracts to free up additional cap space.

The team may not be done yet.

General manager Brett Veach has demonstrated a desire and ability to manipulate the salary cap in order to acquire veteran players at low costs on short deals to retain future cap flexibility. The team can still make ample cap room through additional contract restructures/extensions for  players such as linebacker Anthony Hitchens, tight end Travis Kelce and All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones.

Not every free agent is a home run, but some can pay massive dividends for contenders. So, if Veach is going to pursue additional acquisitions, who might they be? And, what positions might the team target?

Logan Ryan, Cornerback

The best cornerback on the market is former Tennessee Titan Logan Ryan. Ryan is an excellent cover corner who would tremendously upgrade the secondary for Chiefs. While many have argued the lack of investment at the position is a willful decision, others believe an upgrade is necessary.

What compounds the lack of depth is the trouble starting cornerback Baushard Breeland finds himself in. The veteran re-signed with Kansas City this offseason as a free agent for what appeared to be a discounted rate. Now, it is revealed that in addition to his new legal issues, he was already facing a four-game suspension.

Ryan may very well be out of Kansas City’s price range. However, for a team looking for a repeat, adding the veteran on a one-year deal may be worth the investment.
