5 realistic trades the Kansas City Chiefs can make to break football

The Kansas City Chiefs will be a Super Bowl contender as is, but here are five trades they can make to break the will of the other 31 teams.

Coming off a win in Super Bowl LIV, the Kansas City Chiefs will linger as a favorite to repeat this year and they’ll be a legit contender for as long as Patrick Mahomes is the quarterback operating at anything close to peak.

The Chiefs don’t have a lot of gaps in their roster, and all of the key pieces from last year’s team are returning. A long-term deal for franchise-tagged defensive lineman Chris Jones is about all that’s left on their offseason agenda, unless opportunities to upgrade a few areas surface.

On that note here are five realistic trades the Kansas City Chiefs can make to break football, not to mention breaking the collective will of the other 31 NFL teams.

The Jets may or may not be willing to trade Adams, one of the best safeties in the NFL. But the longer he goes without a long-term deal from the team that drafted him, the easier it will be to foster trade rumors.

Adams is making $3.5 million in guaranteed money this year, and after the Jets made the no-brainer move to pick up his fifth-year option he’s lined up to make $9.86 million next year. The Chiefs have just enough cap space ($4.879 million) to take on Adams this year with little trouble. But with other contract considerations in the pipeline (Chris Jones, Patrick Mahomes), a multi-year deal in line with Adams’ market value will be difficult to pull off.

For some reason when they restructured wide receiver Sammy Watkins’ contract, the Chiefs included a no-trade clause. But realistically nothing would stop them from circling back to remove it, and apart from a dead money hit the door would be open to trading him. Clearing that money would theoretically make a trade for Adams possible, as the Chiefs look to cover for the possibility Juan Thornhill (torn ACL) misses a big chunk of the season.
