Should the Packers sign Josh Gordon to give Aaron Rodgers another target?
The NFL Draft came and went, with the Packers opting not to select any new weapons for Aaron Rodgers outside of a fresh backup running back in AJ Dillon.
Green Bay’s wide receiving corps consists primarily of Davante Adams, with free agent pickup Devin Funchess sliding into the No. 2 role and Marquez Valdes-Scantling primarily in the slot. That’s not a terrible threesome, but considering Rodgers is in his last few seasons under contract in Green Bay, and that the Packers just spent their first-round selection on his potential replacement, Jordan Love, it’s fair to expect more.
Thankfully, Josh Gordon could be available after applying for reinstatement, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Media.
Could Josh Gordon be the missing piece for Aaron Rodgers, Packers?
Gordon, 29, is a low-cost, high-reward acquisition that Brian Gutekunst and Matt LaFleur should thrive on at this point in the offseason. The former Pro Bowler relapsed after the death of his brother last November which led to his fifth suspension from the NFL for violating the substance abuse policy.
Gordon would be an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career assuming he’s reinstated, and that gives him free rein on his future. Signing with Green Bay in a low-stress environment would be similar to the locations that have attracted him in the past, similar to Seattle in 2019.
If any quarterback can get the most out of a newly-inspired player like Gordon, it’s Rodgers. Entering his age-36 season, the future Hall of Famer is running out of time to make a run at his second Lombardi trophy, and surpass fellow Green Bay legend Brett Favre.
Gordon, who has quietly put up 737 and 426 yards (27 catches a touchdown in 11 games in 2019) in back-to-back shortened campaigns, would be a valuable addition to Rodgers’ war chest, assuming he can stay on the field.
