Andy Reid’s ESPYs tribute will make you want to run through a wall for him

The ESPYs honored the best in sports on Sunday night, including Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid in a surprising tribute.

While the ESPYs served as a reminder of the thin line that’s been suddenly erased between sports and politics, the award show remained a celebration of the greatest athletic achievements of the past calendar year. With that, of course, came an acknowledgment of all the Kansas City Chiefs accomplished in winning the Super Bowl over the San Francisco 49ers, their first championship in 50 years.

Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City’s young core has the makings of a dynasty, and therefore could have many title-winning seasons ahead of them. For Andy Reid, however, this has been a long time coming.

The ESPY’s provided a tribute to Andy Reid, who finally won his first Super Bowl as a head coach in 2020.

Reid is one of the most well-respected coaches in the NFL, and had a Hall-of-Fame resume even without a Super Bowl to his name. He’s coached up the likes of Brett Favre (as QB coach) and Donovan McNabb, installing offenses which allowed those established signal-callers to flourish. With Mahomes, he’s done more of the same, as he slowly took the training wheels off for the Texas Tech product at a time when many still questioned why they selected him so high in the 2017 NFL Draft in the first place.

The Chiefs were unable to win the ESPY’s Best Team award because of COVID-19, but it’d be tough to deny them that honor, even had the NBA and NHL seasons finished as scheduled. Kansas City played with fire come playoff time, but were able to turn things on offensively when necessary and made a statement.

Mahomes, Travis Kelce and many on the Chiefs Super Bowl-winning roster tweeted out their appreciation of Reid in the moment, and it was truly long overdue.
