Chiefs doing themselves a disservice by not exploring Colin Kaepernick fit

The Chiefs quarterback depth is not what is needs to be behind Patrick Mahomes.

If we’re being direct, Chad Henne should not be the Kansas City Chiefs emergency option should Patrick Mahomes style of play get the best of him in 2020. Henne, a valuable veteran quite willing to hold a clipboard, hasn’t thrown an NFL pass since 2018 when he was a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Chiefs have a couple young, intriguing options behind Henne, but neither should be thrust into action just yet, especially when there’s a former NFC Championship-winning starter on the open market.

Should the Kansas City Chiefs sign Colin Kaepernick?

Perhaps suggesting the Chiefs sign Colin Kaepernick is getting ahead of ourselves, but why not bring him in for a workout? Henne is not the young prospect he once was, and hasn’t thrown a touchdown pass since 2015. Jordan Ta’amu was in the XFL last season, and Shea Patterson went undrafted despite having Jim Harbaugh as his head coach. Kaepernick, even with some rust, would appear to be a better option behind Mahomes.

Now, why put so much stock into Mahomes’ backup? That answer is rather obvious to anyone who’s watched the young gunslinger play. As revolutionary and otherworldly as Mahomes looks at times, he puts himself in harm’s way often. Mahomes missed two games last season and was replaced by Matt Moore in those starts. With Moore no longer the steady hand behind Mahomes, Kaepernick could step right in and be a better fit in an offense built for a free-wheeling, mobile quarterback.

For Kaepernick, the benefit is also clear. Such an opportunity would give him a path back to a starter’s role if he signs on a short-term deal with the Super Bowl champions.

With the stigma behind signing Kap essentially gone (for the better, I might add), one serious look at the 32-year-old as a QB prospect ought to land him the backup gig in KC.
