NFL insider hints at ‘big news’ looming for Eagles

The Eagles could be closing in on a major move in late July

The Philadelphia Eagles offseason could use a turn towards the positive, as they’ve been dealing with the fallout from DeSean Jackson’s anti-Semitic instagram post for the past week. D-Jax has apparently satisfied Jeffrey Lurie enough in his efforts to ‘educate himself’ for now, meaning the Eagles won’t void Jackson’s contract.

Despite that distraction, the Eagles still have an estimated $22.6 million in cap space with their top-51 players in tact, per Spotrac. That means, should they make the right roster decisions, there’s still room to add another major contributor to the roster.

NFL insider Brian Baldinger hinted at a major move looming for the Eagles in late July.

With the Eagles recent rumored interest in Jadeveon Clowney, it’s fair to wonder if this is what Baldinger is hinting at. Adding Clowney would take a significant amount of cap room, and while the Eagles have some flexibility to make a deal happen, it’s far from a certainty, especially for a team which prides itself on roster depth.

The more likely move would be signing a true backup running back to Miles Sanders, as the Eagles would prefer to use a two-back system of sorts. Of course, if that’s the so-called big move Baldinger is hinting at, he’s going to have some explaining to do. Bringing back LeSean McCoy on a one-year vet minimum deal won’t exactly make waves.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced several top free agents, including Clowney, to wait for the right fit. Clowney’s recent injury history has made some teams hesitant to match his high asking price, which is a fair point. Without access to a normal physical thanks to travel restrictions, Clowney is stuck.

Baldinger, an NFL Network analyst, knows something we don’t. Who doesn’t love a good surprise?
