Before NFL training camps officially start, Chiefs rookie running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire is coming into year one with a great attitude.
In a year following a Super Bowl LIV win, the Kansas City Chiefs went into the 2020 offseason looking for ways to reload their roster for another run at a Lombardi in Super Bowl LV. With contract extensions for star quarterback Patrick Mahomes and defensive tackle Chris Jones, KC ensured two of its best players will be around for the foreseeable future.
Outside of keeping Mahomes and Jones via extension, building through the draft was another key for KC’s offseason. The Chiefs started its draft class with a bang in 2020 by picking up former LSU running back and National Champion Clyde Edwards-Helaire with the last pick in the first round.
With training camp only days away, Edwards-Helaire is making a great first impression for the energy he is willing to bring to the Chiefs on the field.
Clyde Edwards-Helaire will fit in perfectly in Kansas City
As a first-round running back, Edwards-Helaire is going to be asked to make an immediate impact on the Chiefs’ offense. With Damien Williams coming back as the incumbent starter, Edwards-Helaire is saying all the right things by valuing team success rather than his own.
For running backs, pass protection is not the most desired task, but it comes with the territory. If Edwards-Helaire wants to get reps with the dynamic, high-flying offense led by Mahomes, doing whatever it takes when he does not have the ball is a great first step.
For the Chiefs, their division of the AFC West consists of a lot of great pass rushers. With the duo of Von Miller and Bradley Chubb in Denver, Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram in LA and the young upstarts of Maxx Crosby and Clelin Ferrell in Vegas, KC has its work cut out for itself all year long.
Keeping Mahomes upright all year long is of the utmost priority for the Chiefs in 2020. If Edwards-Helaire does his job in pass protection, he allows himself, Mahomes and everyone else on KC’s offense to explode like they usually do any given Sunday.
