Philip Rivers not considering opting out because he’s not ready to retire

If Philip Rivers were to opt out of 2020, he’d consider that retirement.

Why would Philip Rivers move his entire family to Indiana just to opt out of the 2020 NFL season?

Prior to this offseason, Rivers had spent his entire Pro Football Hall of Fame career with the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers. Though the Super Bowl appearances weren’t there, Rivers became arguably the best quarterback in franchise history. He’ll have a bronze bust in Canton not too far from where Chargers legend Dan Fouts’ resides. For now, Rivers plays for the Indianapolis Colts.

Rivers signed a one-year deal with the Colts to play for his former Chargers offensive coordinator, Frank Reich. Once Rivers does hang up the spikes, he will become a high school football coach so he can watch his son play the sport he became a legend playing. When asked if Rivers had considered opting out with a wife and nine kids at home, Rivers never saw it as an option.

He told FOX 59 in Indianapolis, “Making that decision [to opt out] for me would have been making the decision to be done, period. Retiring. Which is nowhere on my mind…Did I ever consider it? No. Do I think someone that does consider it or does opt, do I think they’re crazy? No. I think it’s really up to each person and their family to do what’s best for them.”

“The finality of it is the big thing. You never know when you make a decision like that. In a couple of weeks sometimes you go, ‘Oh man, I wish I wasn’t.’ It will be interesting if you hear from some guys, how they feel about it in a few weeks and some guys that maybe were thinking about it and didn’t if they wish they did two weeks down the road.”

Can Philip Rivers finally get a Super Bowl in what’ll be his final season?

Wouldn’t that be something? For Rivers to spend his entire career playing for one franchise, never beating the New England Patriots and thus, never getting to a Super Bowl and then have all that change in essentially a throwaway season with the Colts on the last hole of his career? I mean, if John Elway can win a Super Bowl in his final two seasons, why can’t Rivers win one with the Colts?

No, the Colts aren’t anything more than a dark horse contender to come out of the AFC this year. Keep in mind they play in the same AFC conference featuring the Baltimore Ravens, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Patriots. However, the Colts seem to be the favorites to win the AFC South. Then again, if luck is on the Colts’ side and they get the top seed in the AFC, you never know.

While we don’t expect Rivers to retire a champion, don’t look for him to retire before season’s end.
