Former Packers Pro Bowler could get fresh start in Cincinnati

A former Green Bay Packers defensive lineman could be on the move to Cincy

The Cincinnati Bengals are beginning their build to the future with LSU quarterback Joe Burrow at the helm. As is the case with many teams who draft a quarterback, they try to put proper pieces around them before they’re due for a costly contract. For the Bengals, they’re looking to emerge from the basement of the AFC North, and with that, they’ll need a stout defensive line. And it appears they’re bolstering the front four.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, former Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions defensive tackle Mike Daniels visited with the Bengals. If all goes well, the team will likely sign Daniels to a deal

Adding Daniels makes sense for the Bengals

Daniels’ began his career in 2012 with the Packers as a fourth-round pick out of Iowa. Through his first six seasons, Daniels was a consistent force because he rarely was injured. That all changed in 2018, however, after he was limited to 10 games because of a foot injury. Following the season, the Packers released Daniels from his contract.

Shortly after being let go by the Packers, the Lions pounced and inked him to a one-year contract. Unfortunately, Daniels was placed on Detroit’s injured reserve with an arm injury after nine games.

Through his eight NFL seasons, Daniels recorded 235 combined tackles (49 for loss), 70 quarterback hits, 30 sacks, two forced fumbles and one interception.

Cincinnati was in need of defensive tackle depth after Josh Tupou opted out of the season and the team released Ryan Glasgow. If Daniels signs with the Bengals, he’ll line up alongside Carlos Dunlap, Geno Atkins and offseason acquisition DJ Reader.

Given that the Bengals are in the same division as rushing threats as Lamar Jackson, Nick Chubb and Mark Ingram, bolstering up the defensive line isn’t a bad thing to do. Adding Daniels will certainly help Cincinnati stop the run in 2020.
