Former Cowboys coach Jason Garrett, now with the Giants, didn’t discuss his Dallas departure when asked
Garrett is getting ready for Year 1 with the division rival New York Giants, which is going to take some getting used to for those of us familiar to seeing him on the sidelines in Dallas. Instead, Garrett will be leaned on as an experienced assistant and potential play-caller (should Joe Judge choose) leading a young New York offense featuring second-year QB Daniel Jones and bell-cow running back Saquon Barkley.
The former Cowboys coach was asked by the media about his final days in Jerryworld, but failed to give much if any information, instead opting to discuss the good times.
Garrett’s been nothing but class since he was let go by Dallas
The 54-year-old coach said that the opportunity to groom Jones and the Giants offense was too good of an opportunity to pass up, rather than sitting out a season and landing a head coaching job in 2021. Garrett was willing to talk about his time in Dallas some, summing up his stay as a whole rather than focusing on the negative.
“Awfully proud of the program that we built and the teams we had. We had a lot of great days there…I’m very grateful for that experience and for the people who made that experience what it was,” Garrett said, per Jon Machota of The Athletic.
As much as Cowboys fans were tired of Garrett towards the end of his tenure, that doesn’t mean he’s not a respected football mind, even in Dallas. At one point, he was deemed an up-and-coming fan favorite, and was even tabbed to replace Wade Phillips. That shouldn’t be forgotten, nor should his mildly successful stay in Dallas, despite the way things ended.
