Seahawks bringing in former center Justin Britt for visit

The Seattle Seahawks could be bringing back Justin Britt.

Earlier this offseason, the Seattle Seahawks made moves to clear up cap space, in hopes of pursuing some top-tier free agents. One of the cap casualties was center Justin Britt, as the team expected free agent signing BJ Finney to get a firm grasp on the starter’s role. That hasn’t happened thus far in training camp, and Seattle might be going back to the well again.

According to ESPN’s Field Yates, the Seahawks have brought Britt in for a visit. It’s unknown if the team will sign him to a new deal. Britt is now the second former Seahawk to tryout for the team on Wednesday, as wide receiver Paul Richardson made the trek to Seattle’s training facility.

Britt has been a consistent part of Seattle’s offensive line

Last season, Britt tore his ACL during Seattle’s Week 8 contest against the Atlanta Falcons. With Britt due over $8 million in 2020, the Seahawks opted to release him with an injury designation back in April. However, it was noted that Britt wasn’t dealing with any setbacks in his rehabilitation.

Seattle used their second-round selection in the 2014 NFL Draft on Britt, who was coming out of Missouri. Originally, Britt started off as the team’s starting right tackle, but then made the transition to guard in 2015, until finally moving him to center the following year. Britt was named a Pro Bowl alternate in his very first year hiking the ball to quarterback Russell Wilson and was handsomely rewarded with a three-year, $27 million contract extension.

The Seahawks felt confident in Finney’s ability to replace Britt, as evidenced by his two-year, $8 million contract. But, Finney is actually losing to first-team snaps to Ethan Pocic in training camp, which isn’t what a front office wants to see in a player whom they invested millions of dollars into.

If Britt is deemed healthy by Seattle’s coaching and medical staff, a deal will be completed. For now, Seahawks fans will play the waiting game.
