A lot of great players have taken the field for this original AFL franchise.
They are the reigning Super Bowl champions, something that the Kansas City Chiefs haven’t been able to say in a half-century. But thanks to 31-20 come-from-behind win over the San Francisco 49ers in South Florida in February, Andy Reid’s club rules the roost when it comes in the NFL these days.
Born the Dallas Texans in 1960, this original AFL franchise moved to Kansas City in 1963, became the Chiefs and was very successful on many fronts. These days, the club has won four straight AFC West titles and been to the playoffs five consecutive years.
Yes, it was a long time between championships. But that doesn’t diminish the fact that a lot of great talent (and this is a players’ list) have suited up for this franchise and many of them are in the Pro Football Hall of fame
However, this list begins with a performer whose NFL career is just getting started. But what a start…
10. QB Patrick Mahomes
Three years with the organization and alright considered a Top 10 player? It’s hard to underestimate the impact that now-highly paid quarterback Patrick Mahomes (via ESPN’s Bill Barnwell) side in a short time would the Kansas City Chiefs.
The organization moved up in the draft to select him 10th-overall in 2017. He sat behind veteran Alex Smith and finally got his chance to start a game in Week 17 at Denver during his rookie year. He took over in 2018 and made quite the impression, drama throwing for 5,097 yards and 50 scores (12 interceptions) in guiding the club to a 12-4 record and the top seed in the AFC. The former Texas Tech standout earned NFL MVP honors as well.
This past year, Mahomes actually missed two games but still put up solid numbers with, 4,031 yards. 26 TDs and only give picks. He also helped orchestrate three come-from-behind wins in each of Chiefs’ postseason outings, starting with a 51-31 victory at home over Houston in which the club trail 24-0 early in the second quarter.
It will be interesting to see where the young signal-caller ranks on such a list five or 10 years from now.
