The Titans have long been the favorite for Jadeveon Clowney, but the Saints have entered the conversation
The Tennessee Titans and Seattle Seahawks lent an olive branch to Clowney long ago, but the star pass-rusher didn’t deem their offers acceptable, and would rather sit out training camp than sign for below his market value. In the moments leading up to the NFL regular season, something has changed either in Clowney’s mindset or the teams chasing him.
The start of the NFL regular season is just days away, and the Saints see an opportunity to strike in free agency despite their delicate salary cap situation. Should they be able to snag Clowney on a one-year deal, New Orleans would possess an elite defensive line to go along with a secondary headline by Marshon Lattimore.
The Saints are pushing hard for Clowney, and hope to make it an easy decision in the coming days
Clowney’s sack numbers in 2019 leave a lot to be desired, but when you factor in his QB pressures in limited playing time, he’s still just as impactful as he’s always been. The 27-year-old turned down a lucrative one-year offer from the Cleveland Browns earlier this offseason, signaling he does have standards after all.
Paired with Marcus Davenport and Cameron Jordan, the Saints defensive line plus Clowney equals a terrifying day for any opposing offensive line. Having more than one legitimate pass-rushing option alongside him should open up more lanes to the quarterback, where Clowney is among the best in the NFL at doing damage.
The Saints have been creating cap space the last few days in an attempt to make room for Clowney. Unless the Titans act fast, it seems as though things are trending in that direction.
