Todd Gurley might be a Falcon now, but he’s always going to be a Dawg.
Todd Gurley has reunited with Georgia football, and it’s an absolutely wonderful thing.
The star running back for the Atlanta Falcons is entering his sixth NFL season out of UGA. Gurley played three unforgettable seasons with the Georgia Bulldogs from 2012 to 2014. As a true freshman in 2012, Gurley was a big reason the Dawgs came so close to playing for a BCS National Championship. Now, he’s giving back to the place he considers his second home, Athens, Georgia.
“Athens is my second home, and playing for the Falcons will allow me to spend more time there,” said Gurley. “UGA fans embraced me as a young man, and that support has stayed with me throughout my time in the NFL. I am looking forward to getting to know the students and alumni, and making a difference in the community that has meant so much to me.”
Todd Gurley has been and always will be a good Dawg, always giving back.
Gurley has spent the first five seasons of his NFL career with the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams franchise. Though he starred with the Rams, he was on the other side of the country, far away from his native Tarboro, North Carolina and his college home of Athens, Georgia. Gurley was beloved during his three years on the team and the Classic City will always embrace him.
Given the proximity between Athens and the Falcons’ headquarters in Flowery Branch, Georgia, it certainly makes things easier for Gurley to have a positive impact in the Athens community than he could over in Los Angeles. Despite being the home of the state’s flagship university, Athens-Clarke County is one of the poorest areas in the state of Georgia. Any help goes a long way.
Even though Gurley never played for Georgia head coach Kirby Smart, as Mark Richt was still leading the Dawgs on fall Saturdays in the early 2010s, it’s been great to see Smart welcome back anyone with UGA ties. After all, Gurley and Smart are both former Georgia football stars, as Smart was an All-SEC performer at safety before embarking on his professional coaching career.
