Brett Favre comments on Cowboys potential with Mike McCarthy

Brett Favre believes his former coach will be great with the Cowboys.

The Dallas Cowboys are starting the new decade with a fresh start at head coach. Mike McCarthy is now in charge after a decade of mediocrity and playoff disappointments under Jason Garrett.

McCarthy was the head coach of the Green Bay Packers from 2006-2018 and got to work with both Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers. The former had some nice things to say about his head coach and the Cowboys’ outlook in 2020.

Favre believes in McCarthy and the Cowboys

Dallas has a ton of money invested in stars like Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott, and Amari Cooper. That is why Garrett had to go after finishing 8-8 in 2019. He left with a total of two playoff victories and never once reached the NFC Championship Game.

McCarthy notably took some heat for only winning one Super Bowl in Green Bay. Just winning one would make him a hero in Dallas. Also, saying only one is a bit harsh given how hard it is to reach that mountaintop.

A change in leadership may be what the Cowboys needed after spending so much time with Garrett in charge. McCarthy has a talented quarterback in Prescott and a stacked roster in general. He is already inheriting a quarterback who threw for 4,902 yards and 30 touchdowns in 2019. Very few new coaches show up with that luxury already in place.

Favre is speaking from past experience. The stuff about toughness is a bit generic, but mentioning a more creative playbook is something that should in fact help the Cowboys.

This is all talk and hype at this point in time. McCarthy was fired during the 2018 season and reports at the time indicated a real problem between him and Rodgers. What the Cowboys saw was a Super Bowl champion head coach. Favre apparently sees the same and his take is great news for any worried Cowboys fans.
