49ers avoid worst-case scenario with Jimmy Garoppolo injury

There’s major relief for the San Francisco 49ers, as Jimmy Garoppolo’s ankle injury isn’t as serious as it could have been and he may play in Week 3.

Go ahead and take a deep breath, San Francisco 49ers fans. Your franchise quarterback is going to be just fine.

On Sunday, Jimmy Garoppolo suffered an ankle injury and was forced to miss the second half of the team’s convincing victory on the road against the New York Jets. Fortunately for the team, head coach Kyle Shanahan has already come out and said the injury isn’t serious at all and there’s a chance the signal-caller will be able to take the field in Week 3 against the New York Giants.

Nick Mullens will start for the San Francisco 49ers if Jimmy Garoppolo is unable to go against New York

There was definitely some concern when Garoppolo didn’t lead the offense out onto the field for the second half against the Jets. However, the expectation, for now, is that the standout quarterback won’t be missing significant time.

If he is unable to go against the Giants this weekend, it will be the Nick Mullens show for San Francisco. The Southern Mississippi product threw for 71 yards and an interception in the win against the Jets. Before going down with his injury, Garoppolo was on fire, throwing for 131 yards and two scores.

Mullens has starting experience for the team, as he started eight games for the 49ers in 2018. Last season, he appeared in one game for the 49ers as Garoppolo’s backup but didn’t attempt a pass.

He struggled on Sunday against New York, so we’ll have to see how Shanahan decides to mix things up against New York if Garoppolo can’t go, especially with Raheem Mostert not expected to play due to a knee injury.
