Texas Tech alum Patrick Mahomes was an emotional wreck watching his alma mater try to upset Texas before falling just short in overtime.
This week of college football has been completely bonkers. On Saturday, the shorthanded Kansas State Wildcats managed to come back from a 35-14 deficit to defeat the No. 3 Oklahoma Sooners 38-35. It appeared we were close to having our second upset win of the day in the Big 12, but it didn’t happen because of a late-game collapse.
The No. 8 Texas Longhorns hosted the in-state rival Texas Tech Red Raiders and were considered the heavy favorites in the matchup. However, Texas Tech refused to bow down, and managed to hold a commanding lead over the Longhorns late in the fourth quarter! Red Raiders quarterback Alan Bowman threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to a diving T.J. Vasher to give them a 49-41 lead late in the fourth quarter.
No Texas Tech alum was happier than Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who gave a shoutout to Vasher following the touchdown.

Mahomes’ happiness grew to exponential levels on the very next drive. After Texas punted the ball following a three-and-out, the Red Raiders increased their lead to 56-41 on a two-play drive, ending on a 75-yard run by SaRodorick Thompson. Mahomes expressed his joy with a simple smiley face emoji.
Yet, Mahomes got ahead of himself, and it came back to haunt him. Texas would score on their next drive after quarterback Sam Ehlinger hit wideout Brennan Eagles for a 12-yard touchdown, which caused the reigning Super Bowl MVP to start sweating.
It only got worse for Red Raiders fans, as the Longhorns recovered the onside kick and tied things up on an Ehlinger touchdown pass to Joshua Moore to tie things up at 56 points apiece, forcing the game into overtime. That was when Mahomes immediately regretted jumping the gun on those tweets and even tagged “Old Takes Exposed” in case the Red Raiders ended up blowing the perfect opportunity to win.
Texas received first possession in extra time and immediately capitalized with yet another Ehlinger touchdown pass to Moore, giving them the 63-56 lead. The Red Raiders couldn’t do anything on their lone overtime drive, as they lost four yards on three plays before Bowman threw a game-ending interception to Texas safety Caden Sterns on fourth down.
Mahomes was not available for comment after the loss, and by that, he didn’t tweet.
Texas Tech was on the verge of pulling off an unthinkable upset, but they fell back down to Earth at the worst possible time. Expect Mahomes to let out his frustrations on the Baltimore Ravens this upcoming Monday.
