Marlon Humphrey thanking his dad after signing new deal will make you cry (Video)

Marlon Humphrey has been made wealthy by the Baltimore Ravens, and his message to his former NFL player dad will make you cry.

Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey became the latest NFL player to cash in on Thursday, with a reported five-year contract extension worth $98.75 million ($66 million in total guarantees). Humphrey, a first-round pick in 2017, is in the second-to-last year of his rookie deal. So he’s now tied to the Ravens for the next seven seasons.

In terms of average annual value ($19.5 million in new money), Humphrey’s deal puts him just behind Jalen Ramsey ($20 million per year) and ahead of Tre’Davious White ($17.25 million per year) among the league’s highest-paid cornerbacks.

Humphrey played collegiately at the University of Alabama, as his dad Bobby Humphrey did. Bobby Humphrey went on to play four seasons at running back in the NFL, playing in a Super Bowl for the Denver Broncos as a rookie in 1989 and earning a Pro Bowl nod in 1990.

Marlon Humphrey got emotional after signing his extension

During the press conference to announce his new contract, Humphrey got emotional when talking about his father Bobby Humphrey, who played for the Broncos, Dolphins and Bills from 1989-1995.

“My dad has kept me in line. Since I was young, I told my dad I wanted to pay in the NFL and he never let me slip,” Humphrey said. “Things I wanted to do, he was able to tell me no and didn’t really show an explanation, but as I grew older I was able to understand why he did those things. He coached me when I was younger, he’s been everything for me along with my mom. So I really thank him a lot for what he’s done and I hope one day I have a family and I can treat my daughters and sons the way my dad has treated me and my brothers and sisters.”

Humphrey is regarded as one of the best corners in the NFL, with a new contract that now reflects it. But he doesn’t think he’d be where he is without the strong influence of his dad.
