When it comes to what the Dallas Cowboys should do with Mike McCarthy, former edge rusher DeMarcus Ware has an idea.
Every season, the Dallas Cowboys are expected to contend for a Super Bowl, with the NFC East being the bare minimum. But much like everything else in 2020, the Cowboys have been an unmitigated disaster. Their defense was ravaged by injuries and they lost starting quarterback Dak Prescott to a season-ending ankle injury. Add that to unnamed players reportedly trashing the coaching staff, many are wondering if owner Jerry Jones would consider severing ties with head coach Mike McCarthy. But one former Cowboys legend thinks that would be too rash of a decision.
In an exclusive interview with FanSided, former Cowboys pass rusher DeMarcus Ware expressed his belief that Jones wouldn’t fire McCarthy after one lone season on the job.
Ware doesn’t expect a coaching change
“I don’t think that [Jones] would get rid of [McCarthy],” said Ware. “It’s too early. And the thing is there were too many things that happened this year that could be the problem to what’s going on. So I think Jerry’s a guy that gives people opportunity after opportunity until those opportunities run out. So this is just the first one.
“I think McCarthy’s a great coach. It’s just now with the hand that he was dealt, he wasn’t dealt a good one. Jerry Jones will keep him there and keep everything going.”
Ware does bring up valid points. There was plenty of factors that an be attributed to Dallas’ horrific start to the season.
First, the coronavirus pandemic eliminated organized team activities, which are normally held in the spring. Then, there’s the fact that McCarthy didn’t have any preseason games at his disposal to properly evaluate his team, and had to wing it throughout the season. Finally, there were the countless injuries the Cowboys suffered, including season-ending ailments to Prescott, left tackle Tyron Smith and right tackle La’el Collins.
Let’s face it, Jones has shown that he’s shown a tremendous amount of patience with his head coaches. Look no further than Jason Garrett. The former journeyman quarterback was named the interim head coach midway through the 2010 season before being hired full-time. In those ten years, the Cowboys made it to the playoffs just three times and they never advanced past the Divisional Round. It took until missing the postseason last year for Jones to move on from Garrett for McCarthy.
While Cowboys fans aren’t exactly sold on what they’re seeing on the field this season, don’t expect Jones to kick McCarthy out the door so soon, regardless of the outcome.
