Adam Gase builds up relationship with Bill Belichick to look cool

Adam Gase is buddies with Bill Belichick. Anyone buying that?

Adam Gase at this point is the gift that keeps on giving to NFL fans. From his “innovative play calling” to comments on the offense “failing to execute,” it’s clear the winless New York Jets coach is just buying time until he’s ultimately canned at the end of the season.

Still, Thursday’s conversation might be the best one of the bunch when trying to prove his competence as a leader in the locker room.

According to reporters, following his firing from the Miami Dolphins, Gase said that he received a phone call from New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick. From there, a “budding friendship” has blossomed over the past two seasons.

“After I left Miami, he called me and we had a discussion about that ending and seeing what I was going to do moving forward,” Gase said. “That was kind of the starting point there. We just had a conversation to kind of just see what my next steps were going to be.”

There’s history between Adam Gase and Bill Belichick

To be fair, Gase has been in Belichick’s company before. Both worked under the Ikes of Nick Saban during his time at Michigan State before Belichick went on to become a six-time Super Bowl winner and Gase went on to destroy every team’s fanbase. He also worked with the Patriots’ current offensive coordinator, Josh McDaniels, a close ally to Belichick and potentially New England’s coach in waiting.

The two will meet on the field Monday night in what feels like a must-win for New England and a must-lose for New York. Although Sam Darnold still has potential, the upside of having the No. 1 pick with incumbent Trevor Lawrence at the helm is too good to pass up. Meanwhile, although Belichick has refused to admit the team is tanking, a loss would put New Englad at 2-6, almost officially eliminating them from the AFC playoff race.

Gase’s days are numbered in the Big Apple, but maybe Belichick can pull a Saban and fix the disheveled offense back into high gear. Look at Lane Kiffin after spending two years getting belittled by the G.O.A.T. of College Football!

It’s either that or Gase is trying to look cool. No matter what happens, he’s not impressing anybody.
