The LSU Tigers and Georgia Bulldogs have been represented in the Super Bowl for two decades.
Not since Super Bowl 35 between the Baltimore Ravens and the New York Giants has there not been a former LSU football superstar or a proud Georgia football alum playing in the NFL‘s most celebrated game.
Because the winner of the 2020 AFC Championship between the Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs were going to the Super Bowl anyway, at least one Dawg and one Bayou Bengal will be playing in this year’s game down in Tampa between the AFC champion Chiefs and the NFC champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. These impressive streaks get to stay alive for a 20th year.
What does this say about the state of the LSU and Georgia programs?
While it may indicate on-field success for LSU and Georgia, it is more accurate to say these two programs recruit better high school talent than most teams in the country. LSU is well-represented with six players in Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Tyrann Mathieu and Darrel Williams for Kansas City and Leonard Fournette, Kevin Minter and Devin White on the Tampa side of things.
Though LSU has won three national championships since the Super Bowl streak began, Georgia has only played for one national title since the mid-1980s. The only Georgia representative in Super Bowl 55 this year is Chiefs wide receiver/return specialist Mecole Hardman. It makes you really wonder if Kirby Smart and Mark Richt before him got the most out their talent at Georgia.
The only thing we know is a former Bayou Bengal will end up winning a Super Bowl in two weeks.
