Jason Witten lands high school coaching gig after retirement

Jason Witten already has his plans set after he announced his retirement, as he’s been named the head coach of a high school program in Texas.

After 17 incredible seasons in the NFL, future Hall-of-Fame tight end Jason Witten has decided to hang up his cleats and call it a career. While many expected Witten to perhaps head back to the broadcasting booth, that won’t be happening right away.

On Monday, it was announced that Witten will instead be heading to the sidelines, as he’s accepted the head coaching gig at Liberty Christian School in Texas.

Jason Witten is all set to have his coaching career get underway at the high school level

Witten had actually been linked with the Tennessee opening once Jeremy Pruitt got fired, but the Vols ended up hiring Josh Heupel from UCF. Now, Witten is ready to get things going at Liberty Christian School, which is located around 45 minutes outside of Dallas.

For Witten, it’s a return to the Dallas area after he spent 16 incredible seasons with the Cowboys. While suiting up for Jerry Jones, Witten recorded 1,215 receptions for 12,977 yards and 72 touchdowns. Those are incredible numbers and have cemented him as inarguably the best Cowboys tight end of all-time.

This is the second time Witten has retired. He stepped away from the game following the 2017 season and joined the Monday Night Football booth for 2018. However, that experiment was short lived and Witten returned to the Cowboys in 2019. He then surprisingly signed a one-year deal with the Las Vegas Raiders this past season.

After his lone campaign in Sin City, Witten has once again decided it’s time to stop playing ball. While he’ll begin his coaching days at the high school level, the expectation is for him to get some college looks and potentially NFL looks down the road.
