Former Bills QB Doug Flutie is the latest WWE champion (for real)

Former Bills quarterback Doug Flutie added to his impressive athletic career with a WWE title won during Saturday’s Celebrity Sweat Flag Football Challenge.

Doug Flutie has been underestimated his entire life. On Saturday, it wasn’t underestimation but surprise that won him his latest prize.

The former Bills quarterback and Boston College legend won the WWE 24/7 Championship belt during a Celebrity Sweat Flag Football tournament.

Flutie, who was teammates with R-Truth, used the halftime break to come up on the WWE star from behind, flip him to the ground and pin him.

Doug Flutie surprisingly claimed a WWE title, for a few moments

The 24/7 Championship belt has been in circulation since 2019. The rules are simple. It is a championship open to anyone at any time. All you need to claim it is the reigning champion and a WWE ref present. And a successful pin.

Flutie took his chance and executed his pin in the sand with the speed and strength of a man larger than his 5-foot-10 stature and younger than his 58 years.

Unfortunately for Flutie, he is still 5-foot-10 and 58 yards old. R-Truth was able to wrestle the belt back from him just a few minutes later.

Take nothing away from Flutie, though. He’ll forever go down as the 48th WWE 24/7 Champion. In fact, his Wikipedia bio has already been updated to reflect his WWE accomplishment. The moment may have been brief, but it was fun while it lasted.

This year’s Celebrity Sweat Flag Football Challenge featured a showdown between Team Doug Flutie and Team Tracy McGrady, with proceeds going to aid military members and first responders. Team Flutie fell to Team McGrady, 45-38. Maybe that teammate-on-teammate crime from Flutie didn’t work out in the end.

Since it’s Super Bowl weekend, there is a connection to the big game aside from the timing. After Rob Gronkowski successfully won the belt and defended his title-winner status for a few months, R-Truth got it back from him over the summer.
