Bears: Ryan Pace learning from Mitchell Trubisky mistakes

The Chicago Bears are hoping for a rebound season, but general manager Ryan pace needs one.

If anyone wanted to guess what the Chicago Bears were doing this offseason, now would be the time to come up with theories.

One season after finishing 8-8 and making the postseason, Chicago is taking a step forward for every two steps back. Mitchell Trubisky was the answer. Neither was Nick Foles. At this point, what makes Andy Dalton the answer for the Windy City franchise under Matt Nagy?

General manager Ryan Pace agreed to a one-year deal to make Dalton the bridge option for 2021. That’s not enough as both he and Nagy’s jobs are in jeopardy should the team continue to struggle in the NFC North.

Bears GM Ryan Pace said that he’s evaluating QBs in the draft differently. He didn’t fully elaborate but part of that is learning from the Mitch Trubisky selection. He did highlight that there is direct involvement with the coaches, particularly Matt Nagy.

Pace though is hoping his knowledge has grown over the past offseason. Entering the 2021 NFL Draft, he’s hoping to learn from the mistakes of the 2017 night and make the right call for the man under center moving into the future.

Can Nagy add the right quarterback?

Even back in 2017, fans groaned at the fact Chicago traded up to select the North Carolina prospect in favor of a national champion in Deshaun Watson or high-upside Patrick Mahomes. Both players have won a playoff game and are considered top-five at the position.

This offseason, Trubisky agreed to a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills, hoping to learn and back up 2018 first-round pick Josh Allen.

Pace is now making sure to include the opinion of the coaches, primarily Nagy’s. Last month, it was announced the fourth-year coach would return to calling the plays after electing to trust Bill Lazor to fix Trubisky.

Despite bring him in for competition last season, Nagy also said that Foles will not be in the competition will be starting role. For now, he’ll trust that Dalton can get the job done while the team drafts a rookie to compete for the No. 2 role come September.

Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy have both hinted at adding a young quarterback in their Zoom calls.

Pace will always have respect for Trubisky, but the writing is one the wall because of the pick. Now, the Bears are trusting that letting Trubisky walk in favor of Nagy and Pace was the right call after all.

Landing a franchise quarterback is the NFL’s hardest test. Pace needs to change his style of scouting before he fails the exam.
