First look at Trey Lance in San Francisco 49ers uniform reveals jersey number

Here is what first-round pick Trey Lance looks like wearing a San Francisco 49ers uniform.

After being the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, former North Dakota State football star Trey Lance begins his NFL career as a member of the San Francisco 49ers.

San Francisco traded up from No. 12 to No. 3 in a deal with the Miami Dolphins to select the former Walter Payton Trophy winner out of North Dakota State. Even if he only had one year’s worth of starts in college, Lance offers significant upside at the quarterback position. He is expected to back up Jimmy Garoppolo during his first season in the league, but should play some.

Lance sports a jersey number he wore very well during his college days starring for the Bison.

Of the five quarterbacks taken in the first round in April, Lance has the longest way to go when it comes to being an NFL starter. Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson are expected to start Week 1 with the Jacksonville Jaguars and the New York Jets, respectively. Justin Fields will start at some point for the Chicago Bears, while Mac Jones will have to wait a bit with the New England Patriots.

Besides Garoppolo being a capable starter, and one who quarterbacked San Francisco to a Super Bowl appearance two years ago, the biggest reason Lance will need to wait to start is the complexity of Kyle Shanahan’s offense. It takes even the smartest of quarterbacks at least a year to get fully acclimated to it. But by year two in the system, the starting signal-caller flourishes in it.

Look for the No. 5 Lance San Francisco jersey to be among the hottest sellers in the NFL this year.
