Patriots claim former Navy quarterback off waivers from rival Dolphins

The New England Patriots put in a waiver claim on quarterback/receiver Malcolm Perry and stole him from the Miami Dolphins.

In Week 1, the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins play at Gillette Stadium. Perhaps the home team will have an advantage in more ways than one.

On Wednesday, teams were awarded players who were waived the day prior as clubs had to cut down to 53 players on each roster. The Dolphins went ahead and waived quarterback/receiver Malcolm Perry, a star during his collegiate days at Navy.

New England, always looking for an edge, claimed Perry, making him an extra receiver and potential emergency backup to rookie Mac Jones after veterans Brian Hoyer and Cam Newton were released.

The Patriots claimed Malcolm Perry away from the Dolphins

For New England and head coach Bill Belichick, why not? The Patriots can pump Perry for information and if they like what they see over the next few weeks, perhaps he works onto the field in a special teams role.

Additionally, Belichick is likely somewhat familiar with Perry because Belichick went to Navy, the same place his new player made a name for himself.

As a rookie receiver, Perry played in nine games and caught nine passes for 92 yards including one touchdown. For the Midshipmen, Perry started for three seasons and ran for 2,017 yards as a senior, while totaling only 113 pass attempts for his career in the option-based scheme.
