Vikings next head coach could mean poaching Cowboys assistant

A Dallas Cowboys assistant is rumored to be interested in the Minnesota Vikings head coaching job.

After failing to make the playoffs and effectively reach the Super Bowl for the first time since 1976, the Minnesota Vikings opted to part ways with not only head coach Mike Zimmer, but also general manager Rick Spielman. The Vikings are certainly an attractive job for head coaching candidates, considering the players in place.

A rumor stemming from Minnesota sports radio host Judd Zulgad suggests that Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore has interest in Minnesota’s head coaching job.

Cowboys assistant interested in Vikings head coaching job?

Moore is certainly a popular name in this year’s head coaching cycle, and for good reason. The Cowboys offense this season ranks atop the entire league in total yards per game (407.0) and points per game (31.2). Simply put, he has gotten the most out of quarterback Dak Prescott in his return from a gruesome ankle injury suffered in 2020, in addition to their loaded wide receiver corps (Amari Cooper, CeeDee Lamb, Michael Gallup, Cedrick Wilson).

The Vikings do have a similar situation as the Cowboys, minus the offensive line, which is still a bit of a work in progress. But, the real question mark would be what Moore would want to do at the quarterback position, since Kirk Cousins is entering the final year of his contract and they have Kellen Mond, 2021 third-round pick, on the roster.

Getting Moore could be difficult for Minnesota, since he already interviewed for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ head coaching vacancy and has been requested to speak with the Denver Broncos. His list could grow, since there are openings on the Chicago Bears, Miami Dolphins and New York Giants. The Las Vegas Raiders job is up in the air, considering interim head coach Rich Bisaccia helped lead the team to a playoff berth.

The Vikings are already planning to interview former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson.
