Baker Mayfield injury update: Surgery to help QB ‘get back to my true self’

Browns QB Baker Mayfield announced his successful shoulder surgery on social media, calling it a step to “get back to my true self.”

Baker Mayfield’s 2021 season felt like a step back but the Browns quarterback is hopeful that offseason surgery will put him back on track.

On Wednesday, Mayfield posted a video to social media thanking his medical team for a successful surgery to repair his injured left shoulder.

“Surgery went great. It was a complete success,” Mayfield said. “Had a great medical team that took care of me and checked that box off to get this fixed and now it’s on the road to recovery. This is one of those steps to get back to my true self.”

The Browns also released a statement with more details about Mayfield’s surgery and recovery timeline.

“Browns QB Baker Mayfield underwent successful surgery today to repair a torn labrum in his left [non-throwing] shoulder,” the statement reads. “The surgery was performed by Dr. Orr Limpisvasti in Los Angeles and the likely time period for a full recovery is 4-6 months. We anticipate Baker beginning light throwing in April. He should be able to participate in the offseason program on a limited basis while a full recovery is expected by the start of training camp.”

That’s all good news for Mayfield and the Browns, who look ready to move forward with Mayfield as their quarterback in 2022.

Having Mayfield fully back in time for training camp should keep him on schedule to start the season, hopefully in better shape than he finished 2021.

In 14 starts this past season, Mayfield completed 60.5 percent of his passes with career lows of 215 yards per game and 17 touchdowns.

Mayfield is entering the final year of his contract with Cleveland. He will be a free agent in 2023.
