With Tyrann Mathieu set to hit free agency this month, which team will be fortunate enough to sign the veteran safety?

Of all the players getting ready to hit the open market next month, few standouts are more intriguing that Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu. The veteran is a total game-changer, and he’s about to have several teams coming after him.

Mathieu was hoping he’d return to Kansas City next season, but that’s up in the air. If that doesn’t happen, here’s a look at teams who shouldn’t waste a moment in trying to sign him as soon as March 16 arrives.

5. Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers figure to be one of the most aggressive teams in free agency this offseason as the team has around $50 million in cap space entering the new year. That’s a giant chunk of change and it will open the door for them to try and land top talent.

Enter Mathieu. No one can argue that LA’s secondary was tough to watch last season. As good as Justin Herbert and the offense can be, that won’t matter unless the defense can step up and stop opposing playmakers.

That just wasn’t the case in 2021. Matter of fact, that hasn’t been the case for a while. Mathieu could be the kind of guy in the middle of the field to really set the tone for the Chargers. With his incredible speed and tackling abilities, Mathieu is consistently one of the best safeties in the game.

Signing Mathieu would be extra special for the Chargers too, as they’d be stealing him away from an AFC West rival. If the Chargers are serious about going on a deep postseason run in 2022 and beyond, inking Mathieu to a multi-year deal would be a wise move.
