The New York Giants reportedly plan to pursue quarterback Mitchell Trubisky in free agency. What exactly does this mean for Daniel Jones?
The New York Giants’ disastrous 2021 season resulted in the team bringing in a new general manager in Joe Schoen and a new head coach in Brian Daboll. The Giants have a variety of holes on the roster that need to be filled before they can even be considered contenders. One position that is still a bit of a question mark is quarterback, despite Schoen and Daboll praising starter Daniel Jones.
Based on a report from Pro Football Network’s Tony Pauline, the Giants are likely to pursue quarterback and 2017 second-overall pick Mitchell Trubisky in free agency.
So, what does this mean exactly for Jones in 2022?
What does potential Mitchell Trubisky signing mean for Daniel Jones?
Trubisky arriving in the New York metropolitan area means that he is not going to be locked in as the backup to Jones, that’s for sure. He will be brought in to compete with the 2019 sixth-overall pick.
Schoen and Daboll have a familiarity with Trubisky, as he signed with the Bills in 2021 to be the backup behind Josh Allen. That, and to learn from Daboll, who is credited for Allen’s progression into a superstar signal-caller in the NFL. Bringing in a familiar face that knows Daboll’s offense makes too much sense.
Jones showed flashes of good-to-great play in his first three seasons in the league. However, his main issue is his inability to stay healthy for a full season. After Jones picked up a neck injury late last season, the Giants suffered greatly, as they had to rely on Mike Glennon and Jake Fromm. Glennon was dreadful under center, and Fromm was no better. Having a contingency plan at quarterback should be a top priority for Schoen this offseason.
While the Giants are expected to pursue Trubisky, he is not the only one. The former Chicago Bears starter is linked to the Pittsburgh Steelers, New Orleans Saints and Washington Commanders, all of whom are in need of starting quarterbacks.
If the Giants are able to sign Trubisky, Jones should expect some competition for the QB1 spot on the depth chart in training camp.
