Carson Wentz trade actually hurt Washington Commanders Super Bowl odds

The Washington Commanders traded for Carson Wentz and the franchise’s odds to win the Super Bowl next season immediately got longer.

It seems that the extensive Washington Commanders rebrand isn’t going the way Washington wanted, and trading for Carson Wentz hasn’t done anything to help that. In fact, it may be making things worse.

The arrival of Wentz appears underwhelming at first glance. So much so that the odds on the Commanders winning the Super Bowl have actually dropped since the team traded for a big-name quarterback.

According to BetSided’s Donovan Smoot, “prior to the trade, Washington was +6000 (60/1) at WynnBET to win the Super Bowl. After the trade, those odds have dropped to +7500.”

As Smoot surmises, “Wentz, at least in the odds standings, has already damaged Washington’s future without even throwing a pass.”

Carson Wentz trade sinks Washington Commanders Super Bowl odds

Initially, the odds were more favorable to Washington because they were expected to make an improvement at the quarterback position, thus improving their odds. Early analysis on the Wentz trade indicates that’s not what Washington signed up for, so this move only hurt their odds to win the big game.

WynnBet Senior Trading Manager Alan Berg told BetSided why the odds shifted away from Washington’s favor.

“We had them low because of a possible improvement at the quarterback position,” Berg said. “I have no idea what the coaches or staff are thinking with this move. To me, it seems like desperation. So, we moved them higher on our board.”

Wentz may have been displeased when his team won the 2017 Super Bowl without him, but according to oddsmakers, Wentz is more likely to hurt a team’s chance at a Lombardi rather than help them win one.
