Are Chiefs ready to pounce on Jarvis Landry when Browns inevitably cut him?

With Amari Cooper coming to the Cleveland Browns, it feels like an inevitability that Jarvis Landry will be released and a team like the Kansas City Chiefs could swoop in and pick him up.

The Kansas City Chiefs need to be ready once Jarvis Landry inevitably gets released by the Cleveland Browns in the aftermath of the Amari Cooper trade with the Dallas Cowboys.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz said Landry is likely to be released. He carries a $16.6 million cap hit for 2022. He mentions the five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver will have plenty of suitors including the New England Patriots, Kansas City, the Tennessee Titans and the New York Jets.

Now with Cooper joining the Browns, it means Landry’s days with Cleveland are numbered according to Jordan Schultz.

Jarvis Landry contract is too expensive for Browns to afford with Amari Cooper

Landry is in the final season of his five-year contract with Cleveland. It was a five-year deal worth $75.5 million. He accounts for 7.52 percent of the Browns’ salary cap, trailing only starting quarterback Baker Mayfield at 8.66 percent. Landry is a $16.6 million cap hit, but only carries a $1.5 million dead cap hit. Cutting Landry would save the Browns over $15 million in cap space.

As far as the Chiefs are concerned, they are still in the red with regards to the 2022 NFL salary cap. They have already franchise-tagged offensive tackle Orlando Brown, while key defensive backs such as Tyrann Mathieu and Charvarius Ward will test the market now. For Kansas City to have enough space, they have to extend Tyreek Hill and get Frank Clark to agree to a restructure.

When it comes to competition for Landry’s services on the open market, Kansas City is in worse shape than the Titans and Patriots and absolutely in worse shape than the Jets. All three teams supposedly in the running to land Landry should he be released can outbid the Chiefs presently. Ultimately, they have to make the two other roster calibrations to have any shot at getting him.

If the Cooper trade did not sound the alarm, Landry potentially hitting the market better do it.
