While the expectation has been the Chiefs would release Frank Clark, Kansas City is reportedly looking to restructure his contract to keep him in town.
Could defensive end Frank Clark end up staying with the Kansas City Chiefs after all? That’s up in the air, as the general feeling around the veteran pass-rusher was that he’d be released this offseason due to his massive contract.
Apparently the Chiefs aren’t ready to part ways with him just yet. According to NFL insider Albert Breer, Kansas City is hoping to restructure Clark’s current deal so that he won’t suit up elsewhere this fall.
The Chiefs restructuring Frank Clark’s deal would be a major victory
If Kansas City were to keep Clark on the roster as is, he’d have a $26 million cap hit for 2022. There’s just no way the Chiefs can afford that number, which is why the word surrounding Clark for a while has been that he’d either be released or traded.
The 6-foot-3, 260-pounder arrived to Kansas City from the Seattle Seahawks in 2019 and has been selected to the Pro Bowl in three consecutive campaigns for the Chiefs. Clark of course played a huge role in helping Kansas City win the Super Bowl in 2020.
Fans everywhere are hoping that he can stick around to try and help the Chiefs bring home the Lombardi Trophy next winter, but first the two sides need to get on the same page contract wise. Clearly Kansas City wants Clark back, but they just can’t afford his current cap hit.
On top of Clark, things are unknown with safety Tyrann Mathieu. Kansas City is going to have to be incredibly creative to get both standouts back for 2022. General manager Brett Veach is working overtime to get that done.
