Steelers WR Diontae Johnson refutes contract rumors amid workout absence

As talented wide receivers across the NFL are apparently looking to be the recipients of better contracts, Diontae Johnson is appearing to refute one contract rumor.

Diontae Johnson didn’t show up for a voluntary workout with the Pittsburgh Steelers and some believe it might be because he is looking for some money. However, there’s a chance that might not be the case.

According to a tweet from Andrew Filipponi of 937thefan, a radio station in Pittsburgh, a source apparently indicated that Johnson didn’t show up to the “voluntary offseason program” on Monday because he wants to be paid.

However, following this being shared on social media, Johnson himself appeared to respond by taking the time to share a couple of his own tweets.

That seems like a pretty solid source to weigh in and share some knowledge about this matter. That said, it’s still worth noting that Johnson’s tweets here are a little vague and do not directly address anyone or anything in particular.

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Diontae Johnson sounds off on contract rumors

Johnson, who has played through three seasons since being drafted by the Steelers, has been a very notable contributor for Pittsburgh’s offense over the past three years. Gradually, Johnson has improved throughout his brief NFL career up to this point so far.

During his first season with Pittsburgh, Johnson caught 59 passes for 680 yards and five touchdowns as he played in 16 games and made a dozen starts back in 2019. In 2020, Johnson saw a fairly significant increase in production as he had 88 receptions for 923 yards and seven touchdowns. He played in 15 games and made 13 starts during his second season.

This past year, Johnson improved even more, recording 107 receptions for 1,161 yards and eight touchdowns while playing in 16 games and making 14 starts.

While there may be plenty about this situation that is not exactly all that clear, it’s very clear and obvious that Johnson is a very valuable contributor for this team.
