Green Bay Packers, Las Vegas Raiders, New York Jets

Of course Aaron Rodgers is making retirement decision unnecessarily weird

Aaron Rodgers still hasn’t decided if he’ll retire or play in 2023. So of course the Packers quarterback is going to make the decision as weird as possible.

Perhaps the only thing that is currently certain about Aaron Rodgers is that he won’t be playing for the Green Bay Packers in the 2023 NFL season — or at least that’s what we think based on the current reporting. Given how this situation has played out over the past two years, it’s just about anyone’s guess what’s next in the saga in terms of his decision.

But if you ask the one-time Super Bowl winner, he doesn’t know what he’s doing either. During his weekly appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, Rodgers stated that he hasn’t made up his mind about whether or not he’ll play in 2023.

In fact, Rodgers revealed that he’s set to go on a four-day-long “darkness retreat” where he will be in isolation and “contemplate all things my future.”

Aaron Rodgers retirement decision will be made on ‘darkness retreat’

Well, there you have it. Rodgers is going to head into his personal Fortress of Solitude (currently unknown if his infamous ayahuasca use will make an appearance during this trip, no pun intended) and may or may not make a decision about his retirement but should definitely come closer to making that decision at the very least.

If this all sounds strange, that’s because it most definitely is. Rodgers has been exceptionally mercurial and, frankly, prickly at times in regard to non-trivial decisions. We saw it last year when he contemplated his future with the Packers and it’s less of a surprise but no less weird to see him doing something similar this offseason.

What’s raised the stakes this offseason, however, is the aforementioned assumption that Rodgers is gone from Green Bay. All indications are he’s played his last snap with the Packers, making him a coveted trade commodity for teams like the Raiders and Jets. So not only is his current decision-making process odd, but it’s holding three separate franchises, at minimum, in limbo.

Hopefully he does better than Christian Bale as Rodgers adopts the darkness on this retreat, though. He may not have been born in it, but he needs to start making a decision one way or another.
