Kellen Moore added another former Dallas Cowboys assistant to his offensive coaching staff, thus twisting the knife even deeper.
Kellen Moore and the Dallas Cowboys parted ways, despite a top-five finish in terms of scoring offense. Moore is a head coach in the making, and Mike McCarthy will take over the play-calling.
Moore left for the Los Angeles Chargers hardly a day after parting ways with Dallas, joining Brandon Staley’s staff to help Justin Herbert take another step as a signal caller. To aid that journey, Moore and the Chargers brought in former Cowboys QB coach Doug Nussmeier.
After a disappointing finish to the 2022 season, something had to change in Los Angeles. Hence, the Chargers turned the offense over to Moore, and now Nussmeier, who will work more directly with Herbert.

While Moore and Nussmeier helped develop Dak Prescott into the quarterback he is today, they should also be credited with keeping Dallas afloat while he was injured this past season. Cooper Rush went 4-1 as a starter, and had an 81.2 passer rating. While the Rush hype train isn’t totally unjustifiable, some of that credit has to go to the offensive coaching staff.
As great as Prescott has been at times with the Cowboys, Herbert arguably has more arm talent and potential as a quarterback. Herbert is a former first-round pick out of Oregon and has proven he can be a top-5 QB in this league at his best. He’s also surrounded with weapons like Austin Ekeler, Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, among others.
As for Nussmeier, he will be directly judge by whether Herbert takes to his guidance, and can make the jump many around the league expect of him.
