Cowboys ready to flip first-round WR into a fifth-rounder with latest NFL Draft report

The Cowboys are eying a popular wide receiver prospect ahead of the 2023 NFL Draft, and hopefully he won’t get the Amari Cooper treatment.

Yes, that Amari Cooper trade absolutely should still haunt the Dallas Cowboys as they pursue a few tantalizing prospects in the the 2023 wide receiver draft class.

Per a recent report from NFL’s Ian Rapoport, the Cowboys are hosting Tennessee’s Jalin Hyatt for a visit along with a few other top-30 prospects.

In the last few months, Hyatt has gained much more traction as a bona fide first-round selection, and most mocks have him going within the first two rounds.

The former Volunteer boasts immediate No. 2 wide receiver potential as an explosive outside target who can track deep balls; while CeeDee Lamb gets blanketed by corners, Hyatt could develop into a sneaky reliable wideout under Dak Prescott’s arm and thrive in Dallas’ offensive scheme.

With the draft just a few weeks away, Dallas’ interest in Hyatt feels very real. But who’s to say they won’t deal him in two or three years time and get a mere fifth-rounder in exchange?

Cowboys appear to have their eye on Tennessee WR Jalin Hyatt

Dallas holds a late first-round pick at No. 26 overall, and it wouldn’t be egregious to see the franchise take Hyatt that early. Hyatt does, after all, project to have at least second round value, and for those wondering what his playing style looks like, The Draft Network named Will Fuller as his closest NFL comparison.

After acquiring Brandin Cooks, it would seem as though the Cowboys have their starting offensive lineup all set: Lamb, Cooks, and Michael Gallup boast a talented trio and, along with Tony Pollard’s elite pass-catching abilities, the Cowboys should be rolling.

Yet the biggest loss the Cowboys suffered this offseason (other than Ezekiel Elliott) was tight end Dalton Schultz, so adding more receiver reinforcements could be seen as a prudent move on Jerry Jones’ part to bolster the depth chart for a strong playoff push.

There’s no question that Hyatt would enjoy the reps in Dallas’ pass-happy offense. If Hyatt doesn’t perform up to snuff in the next several years, though, he could unfortunately meet the same fate as Amari Cooper who was shipped away to Cleveland last offseason in return for basically a fifth-round pick. Will the Cowboys once again fumble the bag on this wideout?
